   If you've ever been involved in the lifestyle then you know that the main concern of many is Safety. Having done scenes with some very heavy masochists, my primary concern is always their safety and wellness. To quote another, "the difference between a great extreme scene and having to dial 911 is safety."

SAFE WORDS
  Prior to playing you MUST set up safe words with your play partner. These are necessary for you to communicate your situation to your partner  The most common are the traffic light signals. 

Red Light - MEANING: STOP THE SCENE IMMEDIATELY
Yellow Light - MEANING: Ease off, but don't stop.
Green Light - MEANING: I'm very very happy!

  You can modify these to suit your purposes or use your own system, but safe words MUST be in place so things don't go overboard.

  Bloodplay (KnifePLAY, PlayPiercing, etc.), FirePLAY and extreme psychological play (humiliation, forced exhibitionism, et al) are safe if, and only if, we approach these styles of play with safety as our main concern.  I can assure you that no sub enjoys nearly bleeding to death.

  The safety of a scene is the Dom's main concern (or should be) but the sub shouldn't just let him do and go along with it.  If you are the sub in a heavy scene, make sure things are as safe as they can be, and talk to your Dom about what worries you if there's any problems.  We Doms can forget some detail when preparing for a complex scene.

  Don't worry about what the Dom will think if you point out a potential hazard to a Dom.  If he doesn't like you telling him that mosquito netting near a scene in which you'll do fireplay is not safe, I'd recommend you to pick up your stuff and walk away....if he doesn't care about obviously dangerous things, do you think he'll notice when the knife is cutting too near your main arteries?
